Salomón Chertorivski Woldenberg

México Secretary of Health

Salomón Chertorivski holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in economics from the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México) and a master of public policy degree from Harvard University.

He served five years as Coordinator of the Social Cabinet for the State of Michoacán where he was responsible for developing and implementing health programs, as well as other education and social programs.

He has also worked extensively in the business arena, identifying opportunities and social challenges facing México’s private sector, which later led him to work in the Social Development Secretariat (Secretaría de Desarrollo Social) where he developed and implemented public policies to address those needs.

From December 2006 to March 2009, he served as Diconsa’s CEO, a state-owned enterprise in charge of supplying food and staples to more than 20,000 poor rural communities. During his tenure the company became financially solvent; he modernized its administration and strengthened the company’s social networking capabilities.

In March of 2009, he was appointed National Commissioner of Social Health Protection System (Seguro Popular), which currently provides health coverage to over 49 million Mexicans and will provide universal health coverage before the end of 2011. During his tenure, he incorporated preventive and response strategies to better meet the changing demographics and epidemiological needs of the population, as well as sustainment requirements of the Seguro Popular.

Salomón Chertorivski was appointed México’s Minister of Health, Secretariat of Health, in September 2011.
